Nonstop music for the weeklong holiday

For Shenzheners planning a leisurely staycation or visitors coming to the city for fun, Shenzhen Concert Hall should be on their holiday checklist. 

During the weeklong National Day and Mid‑Autumn Festival holiday, the concert hall has put together a diverse program that ranges from full‑scale classical concerts to entry‑level music workshops, offering something for listeners of all ages and backgrounds.


Afternoon Music Time

On the afternoon of Oct. 4, erhu player Cai Lu, zheng performer Wu Qi and pianist Liu Yanyun, together with their outstanding students, will present a program of traditional and contemporary Chinese works. Selections include “Dream of Flying,” “Peach Blossom Village,” “Horse Racing,” “I Love You, China” and the erhu concerto “Century.” 

Admission is free but tickets are required; follow the Shenzhen Concert Hall WeChat account (ID: szyinyuet) to reserve.

Beautiful Sunday

Pianist Yuan Jie

On Oct. 5, pianist Yuan Jie and his students will perform a varied program featuring “Colored Clouds Chasing the Moon,” “Numa Ame,” a solo rendition of the “Yellow River Piano Concerto,” and selections from “The Red Detachment of Women.” The program draws on China’s rich folk traditions alongside modern works. 

Tickets: 10–30 yuan.

The Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra’s principal clarinetist Zhang Feng, principal violist Yang Liuyin and pianist Li Jiaqi will present a chamber program that includes Mozart’s “Trio in E‑flat Major” (“Kegelstatt Trio”), Brahms’ “Longing at Rest” and Carl Reinecke’s “Trio in A Major for Piano, Clarinet and Viola.” Spanning classical, romantic and modern repertoire, the program showcases the singing quality of the clarinet, the warm timbre of the viola and the piano’s expansive range.

An East‑meets‑West strings concert

Led by acclaimed violinist Yao Jue, the Hong Kong String Orchestra will present a program bridging regional and Western traditions. The concert includes Chinese composer Ye Guohui’s “Cantonese Opera Fantasia,” a medley of Hong Kong pop, and selected Western works such as Grieg’s “Holberg Suite” and Bartók’s “Romanian Folk Dances.” Yao’s virtuosity and expressive playing will evoke the timbre and emotion of a Cantonese opera diva in Ye’s composition.

Organ workshops 

On Oct. 8, organist Chang Xiaoting will lead three separate workshops exploring the history, construction and performance practice of the pipe organ — often called the “king of instruments.” In addition to lectures, attendees will have the rare opportunity to play the instrument themselves under Chang’s guidance.
