November calendar for cultural, sports activities in Shekou

Call for expats in Shenzhen who are eager to learn about Chinese culture! Mark your November calendar for a series of events organised by the Shekou Management and Service Center for Expats (Shekou MSCE) that include workshops and sessions on Chinese medicine, music, painting and calligraphy, plus a community sports day.


1. Traditional Chinese ink painting workshop

This hands-on ink painting workshop will introduce classic brushwork and ink-wash techniques and is aimed at art lovers and anyone curious about Chinese artistic traditions. Participants will practice during the sesion and take home their finished paintings.

2. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) session

This session will introduce common Chinese medicinal herbs, TCM diagnostic and treatment methods, and individual constitution identification. Expats curious about the fundamentals of TCM are welcomed to attend and take part in the interactive elements.

3. Chinese calligraphy appreciation and experience

Participants can appreciate the art of Chinese calligraphy and try brushwork themselves under the guidance of a professional calligrapher. The session offers a calm, guided environment for learning basic techniques.

4. Unlock the melodies of Ancient China: a journey into traditional wind instruments

Music lovers are invited to an evening exploring the xiao (Chinese vertical end-blow flute), dizi (Chinese bamboo flute) and hulusi (Cucurbit flute). The session will cover the structure and history of these instruments and will be presented by Li Haosheng, a graduate of the Sichuan Conservatory of Music who specializes in performance and teaching of Chinese traditional instruments. An exclusive live musical performance will be featured.

5. 8th Fun Games of Shenzhen Bay Community of Shekou Subdistrict

Apart from the above workshops which are part of the Expats’ Monring and Evening School program aimed at helping expats understand Chinese culture and integrate into local life, the 8th Fun Games will take place on Nov. 16. Expat residents will be organized into teams of 15 to 20 members to compete in activities such as bubble ball knockout and team obstacle races. Participation is open to men and women with each team consisting of at least five women.

Interested individuals should contact the Shekou MSCE for registration details and sign up. Seating is limited and places will be allocated on a first-come first-served basis.
