Swiss expert highlights path to circular construction model for SZ

At the Green Building Technology Forum, part of the Shenzhen low-carbon forum Oct. 28, Réne Sigg, Senior Advisor at Intep AG (Switzerland), delivered a speech titled “Switzerland's Leadership in Decarbonization of the Construction Industry: A European Perspective for the Future of Carbon Peaking and Carbon Neutrality.”

Sigg explained that due to Switzerland's limited land and material resources, it is essential to view existing buildings as "material banks." This philosophy means that every component—from facade panels to interior fittings — is designed to be reused, repurposed, or recycled at the end of its life.

“In Switzerland, we are moving toward modular construction, prefabrication, and digital tracking of materials through 'material passports,'” Sigg told Shenzhen Daily. “These approaches can also benefit Shenzhen, which is continuously renewing its urban fabric.”

He suggested that by combining advanced digital tools, clear regulatory frameworks, and innovative design thinking, Shenzhen could leapfrog to a truly circular model — one that reduces carbon emissions, preserves resources, and creates healthier environments for residents.

Speaking of digitalization and AI, Sigg said that these technologies are transforming the building sector. “Digitalization really provides big opportunities,” he said. “With real-time data, buildings can continuously adapt — adjusting lighting, ventilation, and energy use to match human comfort and occupancy. This not only saves energy but enhances well-being and productivity.”

For fast-growing cities like Shenzhen, Sigg noted that these tools are key to helping planners and developers create living spaces that are efficient, resilient, and deeply responsive to people's needs.
