SZ's technological advancements, BRI contributions lauded at forum
The "China in Sight Global Insight" Forum 2023 took place in Shenzhen on Dec. 1, focusing on the theme of "Chinese Modernization and High-Quality Belt and Road Cooperation." About 150 participants, including politicians, think tank representatives, entrepreneurs and media outlets from 30 countries, were invited to engage in insightful discussions on the interconnections between Chinese modernization and Belt & Road cooperation, scientific and technological innovation and sustainable development.

The 2023 Imperial Springs International Forum is being hosted at the Imperial Springs International Convention Center inGuangzhou. The three-day forum, which kicked off Dec. 3, has attracted over 130 political, academic, and business figures from over 40 countries, establishing itself as a high-end platform for China to engage in comprehensive dialogue with the global community. This year’s forum centers around the theme "Multilateralism: More Exchanges, Greater Inclusiveness, and Cooperation.”

This episode will share with viewers the colorful life of Japanese soccer coach Rakuyama Takashi in Shenzhen. Takashi came to China in 2011 to become the first Japanese player in the Chinese Super League, playing for Shenzhen soccer team. He retired as a professional soccer player in Shenzhen three years later and has since dedicated to youth soccer training here. He has trained an accumulative 1,000 teenagers. Takashi says he has been most impressed by Shenzheners’ love for sports. “Shenzhen is indeed an inclusive, international city. People like sports. Many fans often come play soccer here and you’ll see many others run marathon.”

This episode documents Singaporean baker Sim Ser Kiat’s entrepreneurial endeavor of making bread in Shenzhen. Sim arrived in Shekou, Shenzhen in 1988 with his employer, a Singapore oil company, and was overwhelmed by the city’s rapid development. He opened a coffee shop in 2004, and ventured into the bakery business four years later. With the number of expats growing in Shekou, he found that people from different countries have diverse preferences for bread. He had even traveled to France to learn bakery for his new business. Whatever kinds of bread, Chinese, French, Japanese, English or Italian, you’ll find it at your disposal in the city as it becomes increasingly international.

Berger has worked in China for about 10 years and is currently the principal of QSI International School of Shenzhen, an education institution that incorporates local cultural in school curriculum for expat children. She says Shenzhen is a welcoming city to expats who will find it easy to get integrated into the local life. “Shenzhen is like a big melting pot of various cultures” with residents coming from across the country and all over the world, Berger says.

Kocharyan is now the principal cellist of Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra. He calls Shenzhen a “City of Music,” where you’ll feel the enthusiasm for art in the air. The fact that an increasing number of international musicians gather at Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra proves that Shenzhen has become an international metropolis.

Roohan Gandomi teaches at a local foreign languages school, and is also a tennis player and boxer. He drew inspirations from his time in Shenzhen and started composing, creating several songs such as “Miracle” and performing them on stage. Shenzhen is a “City of Miracles” and a “City of Dreams” to him. He says he feels motivated by the city and its vibes.Gandomi finds people in Shenzhen nice and special as they are happy with what they’ve got.

This episode will follow the twists and turns of South Korean pals Yu Eun-ju and Gil Na-hyun as they ventured into Shenzhen. After finishing their aviation service programs in South Korea, the pairs came to study Chinese as exchange students at Shenzhen Polytechnic University. Instead of returning to their home country after the exchange program ended, they stayed in Shenzhen where they found lots of job opportunities and sought employment in companies like Tencent. Later they were inspired by the city’s entrepreneurial spirit and started from scratch a coffee shop they named “A Thing,” serving South Korean-style coffee and desserts. Now they have been living in China for seven years and can’t bear to leave. They work as “Shenzhen’s Global Communication Ambassadors” to help tell the world Shenzhen stories in their spare time. They feel bonded with Shenzhen. “Because they are young, they can do it.”

This episode will share with viewers Canadian engineer Dan Schoonhoven’s love for parks. Schoonhoven relocated to Shenzhen in 2008 to work as an engineer and offshore drilling supervisor for an oil company. Perhaps one of those who have set foot in most parks in Shenzhen, Schoonhoven spends his spare time visiting parks one after another. He says he has been specially fond of plants since childhood and has grown flowers and plants at his own balcony. In his eyes, Shenzhen is a garden city full of green plants. Schoonhoven says he has been deeply in love with this colorful city and hopes to settle down here with his girlfriend.
