With the Spring Festival fast approaching, Shenzhen residents are advised to stay vigilant about protecting their health while reveling in family reunions during the holiday, the Shenzhen Evening News reported.

In light of the fact that there are still some fireworks-related injuries reported during the holiday every year, Deng Zhe, chief physician of the emergency department of Shenzhen No. 2 People’s Hospital, reminds residents to make a detour when seeing people set off fireworks and firecrackers in the streets.

If someone’s eyes are injured, the best way to deal with the injury is to go to a doctor as soon as possible. Pressing, rubbing and touching the wound will cause further damage to the injured eyes, and rinsing the injury will increase the risk of infection.

The injured should avoid rubbing their eyes in order to prevent the wound from expanding due to the pressure. If the eyes are bleeding, it is best to cover them with clean gauze and see a doctor immediately.

Citizens are advised not to apply any ointment to the wound or rinse their hands if they suffer from hand injuries in an explosion. If necessary, normal saline should be used to clean the wound.

For skin burns, residents should cool the burned area with cold water to relieve pain, wrap the wound with clean gauze or a handkerchief and go to the hospital for treatment as soon as possible.

Acute gastroenteritis is also a common illness during holidays, as people tend to eat and drink to their heart’s content at various parties and gatherings.

Deng reminds the public to stay alert to acute gastroenteritis and be heedful of food hygiene during the Spring Festival.

“Rinse vegetables and fruits thoroughly. Utensils and chopping boards should be washed in a timely manner, and separate cutting boards should be used for raw and cooked foods to avoid cross contamination. It’s better to use serving chopsticks for dinner,” Deng told the News.

Citizens are also advised to cook foods thoroughly and keep leftovers in the refrigerator.

Regarding the recent outbreak of the novel coronavirus pneumonia, Deng suggests that citizens try to avoid going to crowded places, wash hands frequently, avoid contact with people who sneeze or cough, enhance physical fitness and avoid staying up too late, which leads to a decrease in immunity.

Residents should wear a disposable surgical mask if they go to a crowded public place and replace the mask every four hours. Passengers should wear disposable gloves if necessary and maintain personal hygiene during the Spring Festival travel rush.
