“学科” means “academic subjects” taught in schools, “类” means “category,” and “培训” means “tutoring.” The Chinese education authorities recently stipulated that, for students who are in ninth grade and under, training centers are forbidden to give tutoring in academic subjects during legal holidays and winter and summer vacations in an effort to alleviate students’ learning burden during the compulsory education period. A more detailed notice explains that Chinese, foreign languages, math, history, geography, physics, chemistry, biology and law studies fall into this category, while sports and arts don’t.
