Shenzhen home to 1,920 AI companies

The number of artificial intelligence (AI) companies in Shenzhen has increased 14% from a year earlier to reach 1,920 in 2022, according to the Shenzhen Artificial Intelligence Industry Development White Paper which was unveiled this week.

The white paper, released during the Shenzhen Bay • World General Artificial Intelligence Conference that was held this week in Shenzhen, was compiled by the research team of the Shenzhen Artificial Intelligence Industry Association and is based on more than 100 surveys of domestic and foreign AI experts and scholars, 12 symposiums and three review meetings.

The scale of Shenzhen’s AI industry reached 248.8 billion yuan in 2022, up 32.1% year on year, according to the industry research department of the Shenzhen Artificial Intelligence Industry Association.

Shenzhen’s AI enterprises are primarily headquartered in Nanshan and Bao’an districts, with their number accounting for 58.1% of the city’s total. Among them, the number of AI companies Nanshan District accounted for 36.8% of the city’s total, and Bao’an District accounted for 21.3%.

The white paper summarized 10 development trends in the city’s AI industry, including “The era of high-quality data will come,” and “‘Chat+’ will give rise to a Copilot-style new industry.”

The white paper also put forward 10 recommendations for the development of the city’s AI industry, including “compiling recognition criteria for AI enterprises,” “conducting experiments on typical social scenarios,” and “establishing an AI ethical governance committee.”
