For world-renowned conductor and Oscar-winning composer Tan Dun, the alchemy of great symphonies and Michelin-starred dishes holds a remarkable parallel. Both, he believes, require the finest ingredients, exquisite melodies, and a master’s touch for them to be transformed into consummate creations. This artistic philosophy came alive Dec. 28, 2023, at V-ZUG Studio Shenzhen in Nanshan District, where Tan donned the apron of a culinary explorer at the fifth session of the “Symphonic Chef Class.”

“The best ingredients hold the potential for Michelin brilliance,” mused Tan, savoring a Michelin dinner while the soothing ambiance of classical music filled the air. “And just like symphonies, the most captivating melodies are the first spark.” He likened the chef’s artistry to that of a composer, skillfully orchestrating flavors and textures to craft a harmonious composition on the plate.
The event is inspired by the theme of Tan Dun's 2024 New Year's concert "Animals, Nature, and Humans."
This unique event, co-hosted by the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra, Shenzhen Revitalization Symphony Development Foundation, and Swiss appliance brand V-ZUG, was inspired by the theme of Tan’s 2024 New Year’s concert, “Animals, Nature, and Humans.” Guests, including Tan, the honorary chief conductor of the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra, learned the art of ravioli-making and plating gourmet dishes.
Huang Xiaoshu (C), council member and secretary general of Shenzhen Revitalization Symphony Development Foundation, speaks at the event.
“Through this program,” explained Huang Xiaoshu, council member and secretary general of the Shenzhen Revitalization Symphony Development Foundation, “we aim to bring artists, gourmets, and philanthropists together to celebrate symphony music and elevate the Orchestra’s influence.” By collaborating with renowned brands like V-ZUG, the program creates a symphony of its own, one interwoven with art, gastronomy, and philanthropy.
Moreover, the “Animals, Nature, and Humans” theme resonates with Tan’s dual passions for music and environmentalism. Huang elaborated, “This choice reflects Tan’s dedication to both his art and the planet.”
Born in 2022 to mark the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra’s 40th anniversary, the “Symphonic Chef Class” is a testament to the Orchestra’s commitment to innovative outreach. Adding to this momentum, Huang revealed to Shenzhen Daily that in March 2024, the Orchestra will embark on a U.K. tour, gracing audiences in 10 cities, including London, Manchester, and Edinburgh, with excerpts from the iconic “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.”
“The U.K. tour will not only help the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra to enhance its popularity internationally, but also facilitate cultural and people-to-people exchanges between Shenzhen and its sister cities in the U.K. and between China and the U.K.,” Huang noted.
On behalf of Shenzhen Revitalization Symphony Development Foundation, Huang Xiaoshu (1st R) gifts Tan Dun (2nd L) a symphony-themed tie and an album featuring Mahler's "Symphony No.5" performed by Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra.
The “Symphonic Chef Class” program offers a delectable glimpse into the Orchestra’s commitment to forging new pathways for music appreciation. As the melodies of fine dining and symphonic artistry intertwined, guests left with a deeper understanding of the profound connection between food, music, and the human spirit.
