Ballet

Ballet de L’Opera National de Bordeaux will stage “La Sylphide” and “Don Quixote” Act 3 this weekend. “La Sylphide” tells the story of a young man who becomes infatuated with a mystical sylph, ultimately leading to tragedy when he abandons his fiancée to pursue the elusive creature. In Act 3 of “Don Quixote,” the ballet celebrates the love story between Kitri and Basilio, as they perform a grand and joyful wedding pas de deux, showcasing their passion and enduring love.

‘Carmen’

Ballet Flamenco de Madrid, a professional artistic group from Spain, adapts the opera “Carmen” into a flamenco show. The production has strong rhythm with expressive, passionate and graceful dancing postures. The spiritual communication brings tremendous appeal among the audience and performers during the whole performance.

Violin

Collaborating with pianist Victor Stanislavski, violinist Asi Matathias will perform virtuosic pieces such as Vitali’s “Chaconne in G Minor” and Sarasate’s “Zigeunerweisen” at a recital.

Opera songs

Five Canadian singers — Lucie St-Martin, Suzanne Taffot, Caroline Gélinas, Philip Kalmanovitch, and Mathieu Abel — will sing classic opera songs by Mozart, Bizet, Rossini, Puccini, Donizetti and Gershwin, as well as some Chinese songs. Canadian pianist Giancarlo Scalia will accompany them.

Piano, art songs

Krzysztof Jablonski, head and academic leader of Piano and Keyboard at the School of Music, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, will present a night of Chopin pieces Friday. Meanwhile, Chinese tenor Shi Yijie will join hands with pianist Chen Sa to present Chinese art songs Saturday.

‘Qiaopi’

The Gezai opera “Qiaopi,” produced in Xiamen, Fujian Province, will be staged tonight. It focuses on the Chinese who left their country to work across Southeast Asia in the 19th century. Qiaopi is the name given to the letters written home by Chinese emigrants.

Khachaturian Trio

The Khachaturian Trio, featuring Armine Grigoryan (piano), Karen Shahgaldyan (violin), and Karen Kocharyan (cello), will play pieces by Rachmaninoff, Shostakovich, Khachaturian and Babadjanyan. Founded in 1999 as “Arsika,” the trio adopted the name Khachaturian Trio in honor of the renowned Armenian composer Aram Khachaturian in 2008.
