After a five-year hiatus for renovations and upgrades, Guangzhou Ocean World reopens its doors today.
This multifaceted marine center, combining exhibitions, science education, research, and leisure activities, is set to become a showcase for the revitalization of the city, offering a rich and engaging experience for residents and visitors.
The revamped aquarium covers an area of approximately 16,000 square meters with a total construction area of around 20,000 square meters. It features four main theme areas: “Jungle Adventure” for outdoor exploration, “Fantasy Realm” for whimsical adventures, “SEC” showcasing diverse fish species, and “Elf Bay” where marine stars captivate visitors.
Visitors can marvel at over 300 marine species and nearly 10,000 marine fish, including the nationally protected green sea turtle, the adorable spotted seal pup known as the “marine panda,” the South American and Californian sea lions, the endangered sand tiger shark as listed by the IUCN, and the beluga whale known as the “canary of the sea,” among others. Once renowned for its lively and playful dolphins, the park also welcomes back its dolphin family.

Beyond being a hub for observing marine life, the park offers numerous interactive experiences, allowing visitors of all ages to interact up close with the enchanting sea creatures. A newly launched IP team, the “Ocean Time Squad” (comprising Dolphin Jiujiu, Seal Bao Bao, and Beluga Wei Wei), closely engage with visitors, adding more fun to family outings.
Guangzhou Ocean World operates from 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. daily, with entry closing at 6 p.m. The park is offering a limited-time offer of a combo ticket, and those who purchase the ticket will also receive a badge, a delightful ice cream treat, cultural and creative benefits, and an exclusive commemorative photo.
Originally opening to the public in 1998 within Guangzhou Zoo, Guangzhou Ocean World was among the first marine centers to operate in China. Following a closure in 2018 due to aging facilities and changing demands, the marine park underwent a comprehensive refurbishment starting in early 2023.
