A group of international travelers from Spain, the United States, and France, who were on a flight from Barcelona with a layover at the Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport, embarked on a one-day tour Aug. 12 to explore the culture and urban charm of Bao’an District.

Shortly after arriving at 7:15 a.m. and completing border immigration procedures, the travelers started the Bao’an Experience Tour, which was organized by the district's tourism administration.

At the Bao’an Urban Planning and Exhibition Hall, located in the Bao’an Library, the travelers familiarized themselves with the history and future trajectory of urban planning and development in the district.

The transit passengers learn about Bao'an District's history at the Bao'an Urban Planning and Exhibition Hall.

They also learned about the history of Bao’an and Shenzhen through a digital presentation on a 50-meter-wide flexible screen.

During the six-hour tour, the tourists rode the Bay Glory Ferris wheel at OH Bay, which provides a stunning view of the area from 128 meters. The group also walked along the Xiwan-Qianhai Bay Slow Traffic Corridor, a unique leisure area along the coast.

Alonso Gelabert Oriol, from Spain, said that the one-day tour was a good option for international tourists who are interested in learning about the city in a short time, and that he would share his experience with his friends in Europe.

In the past, international travelers stayed in hotels during layovers. That is not the case anymore, thanks to the opening of travel tours for transit passengers.

Catalyzed by China’s 144-hour visa-free transit policy, data from the Shenzhen airport show that 500,000 overseas travelers entered China through the Shenzhen Airport in the first half of the year, a 212% year-on-year increase.

Here are a few tourism attractions and destinations in Bao’an District that are worth exploring. Transit travelers can customize their own itineraries based on the length of their layover time.

Phoenix Mountain Forest Park

Located in Fuyong Subdistrict in the southwestern part of Bao’an District, Phoenix Mountain Forest Park is one of the city’s primary suburban forest parks embodying Hakka culture, bamboo culture and cycling culture.

The Phoenix Mountain Forest Park.

Phoenix Mountain has rich cultural heritage, stemmed from the Phoenix Ancient Village, the ancestral home of the descendants of Wen Tianxiang that was established during the late Song Dynasty, at the foot of the mountain. Wen Tianxiang was a Song Dynasty prime minister, scholar and patriot who resisted the Mongol invasion and wrote classics on righteousness.

The Phoenix Wenchang Tower in the Phoenix Ancient Village on the southern slope of the mountain was built in 1816. Made of blue bricks, the tower stands approximately 20 meters tall, making it the tallest surviving ancient tower in Bao’an District. In September 1984, it was designated as one of Shenzhen's cultural relics under city-level protection.

The 600-year-old Fengyan Ancient Temple, accessible by mountain roads and stone paths, lies halfway up the Phoenix Mountain. Constructed between 1297 and 1307, this temple is one of the important Buddhist centers in Shenzhen.

Fengyan Ancient Temple was said to have been built by Wen Yinglin, Wen Tianxiang’s great-grandson, in his honor.

Not far from the temple is the natural stone cave known as “Fairy Cave,” where Guanyin, the Goddess of Mercy in Buddhism, is enshrined. Legend has it that a phoenix once dwelled inside the cave, giving rise to the surrounding rocks being called Phoenix Rocks.
