The SZMS Nanshan Innovation School in Nanshan District hosted a special event titled “Climate Change and Youth Power” on the afternoon of Oct. 22. The event, organized by two of the school’s students, Li Bingchen and Li Bingheng, aimed to raise awareness of climate change among young people and inspire them to take small but meaningful steps to address the global challenge.

A key highlight of the event was the presence of Wang Shi, founder of Vanke Group and chairman of the Vanke Foundation. As a long-time advocate for environmental sustainability and a veteran of 14 consecutive United Nations Climate Change Conferences, Wang was invited by the two brothers to share his extensive experience. He spoke about his work in mangrove conservation, promoting corporate ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) practices, and contributing to the development of zero-carbon campuses. Wang’s engaging storytelling brought the complex issue of climate change to life for the young audience, capturing their attention and interest.

Li Bingchen and Li Bingheng, both 12 years old, have already made an impact in the environmental field. Last year, their joint presentation, “What Can We Do for Climate Change at Age 12?” at the 28th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) earned a standing ovation. Following the conference, the brothers continued their advocacy, sharing knowledge about climate change with their classmates and peers. In July 2024, they spoke at the inaugural China Youth Climate Action Conference, encouraging immediate action on climate issues.

At the event, Wang delivered a keynote speech and facilitated an interactive quiz designed to further engage the students. Under his guidance, the attendees discussed key climate issues and considered how they could contribute to meaningful climate action in their daily lives.

Wang praised the efforts of Li Bingchen and Li Bingheng, describing them as role models for their generation. “The Li brothers exemplify how knowledge can be transformed into will, and will into action,” he said. He encouraged the students to begin by making small changes in their everyday lives and to think creatively about solutions for combating climate change.

Li Bingchen and Li Bingheng also expressed their hopes of being invited to this year’s United Nations Climate Change Conference, where they plan to share the progress they’ve made over the past year. They remain confident that if more young people take ownership of climate issues and stay engaged, the world will see positive and lasting change.
