The Foreign Affairs Bureau of Guangming District will host a free lecture and English salon on bookplates for expatriates. The event, scheduled for Nov. 9, will take place at the Talent Port of Guangming Science City.

Attendees can appreciate the artistry of bookplates, small printed labels adorning books, often found inside the front cover. They are sometimes known as “ex libris,” meaning “from the library of.”

With a rich history spanning over 500 years, bookplates originate from Germany during the Renaissance period. These labels go beyond mere identification, embodying a legacy of book ownership and artistic expression since the 15th century. Renowned artists have crafted intricate designs, serving as unique markers for book proprietors.

Various techniques like woodcut and metal engraving are employed in creating these exquisite prints, often on fine papers with hand-printing techniques.

Bookplate collecting has become a global phenomenon, cherished by enthusiasts worldwide.

In the 1930s, the woodcut print movement advocated by the Chinese writer and revolutionary thinker Lu Xun in China promoted the development of bookplates.

Bookplates have evolved into a unique cultural art form throughout their development and are collected just like stamps.

James Gao, a bookplate collector from Hong Kong, and Simon Zhang, a printmaker with a German training background, will host the English salon, sharing their passion for bookplates.

Attendees are invited to join the salon for an insightful session where Gao will showcase his remarkable collection, offering a close look at these intricate artworks.
