“On the Edge of Fate” explores the connections between individuals through immersive large-scale installations, inviting visitors on a philosophical journey centered around themes of fate, entanglement, and coexistence. A particularly poignant installation, “Letters of Love,” invites audience members to leave heartfelt messages meant for their loved ones, creating a profound emotional resonance and transforming art into a bond that connects souls.
Shiota’s works lead audiences into a deep exploration of the relationships between individuals and the universe. Her intention is to foster empathy, encouraging visitors to forge deep and meaningful connections with her art. Recognized as one of the most influential female artists in contemporary art, Shiota is renowned for her intricate use of thread, weaving expansive, enveloping webs that transform spaces into surreal, dreamlike environments. Her installations often draw from personal experiences and memories, prompting viewers to reflect on the connections between people, objects, and the passage of time.
“Chiharu Shiota is one of the few artists to revolutionize the traditional language of weaving into a philosophical inquiry into the nature of human existence. Her creations, intertwined with linear materials, not only continue the Eastern focus on materiality but also transcend cultural boundaries to construct a universal visual grammar,” said the exhibition curator Lyv Hongrong.

Shiota’s artworks frequently address the themes of absence and presence, delving into the complexities of memory and its relationship with our surroundings and loved ones. Objects such as shoes and keys are often integrated into her installations, symbolizing the traces left by individuals and the narratives tied to them.
“In my works, I hope to redefine memory and consciousness and explore life, relationships, and death. Questions like where we come from, where we will go after death, and how little control we have over our journey in between are what I have always pondered,” Shiota writes in her self-preface for the exhibition. “‘On the Edge of Fate’ gives me the opportunity to bring together works related to destiny and fate.”
Born in Osaka, Japan, in 1972, Shiota studied painting at Kyoto Seika University before relocating to Germany. Her international experiences have significantly influenced her artistic style and conceptual approach. Shiota’s work has been showcased in major galleries and museums worldwide, receiving critical acclaim for its emotional depth and aesthetic complexity.
