On April 6, a lecture-concert in the Beautiful Sunday series will headline Professor Yang Xue, a renowned erhu performer from the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing. She will be joined by her colleague Liu Yinxuan, a yangqin performer, and erhu player Zhao Yu, along with other young folk musicians. Originally an accompaniment instrument for folk music and traditional operas, the erhu has evolved into a solo instrument through generations of Chinese musicians’ efforts to hone their craftsmanship, reform the instrument and create new compositions. Yang will perform on an antique huqin and a modern instrument a repertoire of diverse styles.
The audience will hear the lively “Spring Festival Eve” (“Liang Xiao”) and “Harvest,” the touching “Amis Dance” and the passionate “Into Red Velvet.” Also expect to hear familiar Chinese tunes such as “The Moon Reflected on the Erquan Spring,” and “Horse Racing.”
