Little global explorers embark on Italian cultural journey in Shekou

About two dozen local and expat children embarked on an exciting cultural journey through Italy’s rich heritage in Shekou on Wednesday, exploring its fascinating history, admiring breathtaking architecture and art, and savoring delicious Italian pizza.

The Italy Culture Day, organized by the Shekou Management and Service Center for Expats (Shekou MSCE), was the second in a monthly series of events leading up to the Chinese/Italian Artists Exchange Program in November.

The young global explorers enjoyed an immersive experience guided by Diego Conte, a visiting Italian lawyer, and Christian Martinengo, an Italian lawyer based in Shenzhen.

Conte and Martinengo showcased Italy’s unique charm through images of famous landmarks like the ancient Roman Colosseum, Castel Sant’Angelo in Rome, and the canal city of Venice. Their presentation brought Italian customs, traditions, and foods to life.

Conte, who frequently travels between Italy and China for business, expressed delight at the children’s enthusiastic response. “They showed great curiosity and confidence in learning about Italy,” said the Milan-based lawyer.

Martinengo, who works for a legal firm in Futian District after graduating from the Peking University School of Transnational Law, shared his personal connection to Shekou, saying, “I’m especially thrilled to be here — this is where my Italian father met my Chinese mother back in 1984.”

Last month, Italian choral conductor Concetta Anastasi engaged more than 70 Chinese and expat residents with a chorus workshop in Shekou. She also brought her orchestra, the Rom Ensemble Chorus, which performed near the Shekou Light House.

Nicole Tao, deputy director of Shekou MSCE, told Shenzhen Daily that upcoming events include a wine tasting event in September and a pizza-making workshop for children in October.
