Born in 1989, Kail is a University of Minnesota graduate who has published several novels and runs a precious metals and collectibles shop. He came to prominence in China in 2022 when he donated a photo album to the Chinese Consulate General in Chicago documenting crimes committed by the Japanese army during the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (1931–1945).

The gesture won him widespread respect in China, with some netizens calling him an "ambassador of peace." In appreciation, he was presented with a porcelain tea jar as a national gift in 2022, becoming the third foreign national to receive that honor.

In 2025, the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, Kail was invited to co-host the CCTV Spring Festival Gala in January.

"Through the Storm" is a work of documentary literature structured in five chapters. It covers the WWII photo album and the aftermath of its donation, Kail’s travels and encounters in China, the Nanjing Massacre, Unit 731 (the Japanese military unit notorious for human experimentation during WWII), and his experience on the CCTV Spring Festival Gala. The book reveals previously untold stories, presents new evidence related to the Nanjing Massacre, and conveys Kail’s steadfast commitment to truth and peace.

The volume also includes letters from Chinese primary and middle school students and teachers who were moved by Kail’s actions. Having received thousands of letters — many written in English — Kail said students expressed admiration for his bravery and humility and viewed him as a role model.

Reflecting in the book, Kail wrote, “I understand how crucial this historical truth is to the Chinese people. This history, carrying the memories of a nation, belongs to the land to which it is deeply connected. This WWII album deserves to be seen by all.”

Kail made his first visit to China in November 2024. He described the country as vibrant, modern, and compassionate and said his visit to the Memorial Hall of the Victims of the Nanjing Massacre deepened his understanding of the nation’s historical trauma.
