Creative 'boxes' unveiled at SZ Bay

Writer: Xie Yuhang  |  Editor: Lin Qiuying  |  From: Shenzhen Daily  |  Updated: 2026-01-23

Creative “boxes” have opened along the Shenzhen Bay shoreline, offering a new model for urban public space that blends nature, art and light commerce. The “Shenzhen Bay ● Park BOX” project unfolds along a 2.7-kilometer coastal promenade on the park’s eastern stretch, linking Haiyun Garden, Zhongwan Yuehai Plaza, and Mangrove Coastal Ecological Park.

Conceived as a low-impact, experimental exhibition, the project will ultimately include 12 non-permanent, recyclable BOX structures; nine are already welcoming visitors.

Curated under the theme “Coexistence — Park Life Vision,” the project emphasizes harmony between people and the natural world, and between fast-paced city life and fragile urban ecosystems. The visual identity, inspired by migratory birds, references Shenzhen Bay’s role as a vital stopover for species such as the black-faced spoonbill and speaks to Shenzhen’s migrant and dynamic character.

Each BOX is an architectural artwork and a functional micro-hub — housing cafes, tea studios, imaging concept stores and light retail, while hosting community activities like cycling, frisbee, yoga and bird-watching. The interventions prioritize recycled and local materials and lightweight construction to minimize ecological disturbance.

Vivo’s South China imaging concept store occupies a modular, reconfigurable timber structure that protects the grass while offering immersive displays.

Inspired by the black-faced spoonbill, this E+UV-designed pavilion features mechanically opening “wings,” creating a semi-outdoor lounge that folds into a white sculpture. Visitors receive limited “Deep Bird” merchandise with purchases.

Nesting Bird Forest x CHAGEE

Liu Xiaodu Studio’s near-invisible structure sits within trees; a rooftop terrace is a premier sunset lookout with tea in hand.
