Explore an age of prosperity at 'Zhenguan' exhibition

“The Everlasting Ode to the Zhenguan Reign” at Nanshan Museum highlights the history and culture of the Tang Dynasty’s Zhenguan period (627-649), under Emperor Li Shimin. 

Renowned for wise governance, Li appointed capable officials, listened to candid advice, prioritized agriculture, promoted frugality, and revitalized cultural life. He reformed the imperial examination system, quelled external threats, respected the customs of frontier peoples, and helped usher in an era of peace and prosperity known as the Zhenguan governance.

The exhibition brings together 140 precious artifacts from nine cultural institutions across Beijing, Shaanxi, Shanxi, Gansu, Hebei and Jiangsu — including the Zhaoling Museum, site of Emperor Li Shimin’s mausoleum in Liquan County, Shaanxi. Spanning from the Northern Zhou Dynasty (557-581) through the Tang Dynasty (618-907), the collection sheds light on early Tang political institutions, social life, and cultural exchange from multiple perspectives.

What defines an age of peace and prosperity? The answer emerges in the display of painted pottery figurines and horses, sancai ceramics, gold accessories, bronze mirrors and other treasures. The exhibition invites visitors to explore how a great dynasty built its foundations amid turbulent times, and how it turned the ideal of peace into concrete institutions, everyday practices, and an enduring cultural spirit.
