【Catch Phrase】支付鸨(zhī fù bǎo)

Meaning:

Pronounced the same as “支付宝” (Alipay), this term playing on words was first used by Wang Sicong, son of China’s richest man Wang Jianlin, to make a satiric jab at Alipay’s new online social platforms. As “鸨” refers to a “pimp,” the junior Wang was literally saying that the online discussion groups unveiled by Alipay over the weekend served as a procuring platform for young women. The discussion group allows interaction among strangers and allows users with high credits to give small payments to postings they like. Some users have posted selfies to recruit boyfriends, while others have asked for tips for posting sexy photos. Alipay later issued a statement promising to tighten up oversight and filter illegal information.

Example:

A: 听说王思聪又开撕了。

Tīngshuō wángsīcōng yòu kāisī le。

I’ve heard that Wang Sicong found a new target to lash at.

B: 他还挺有创意的,把支付宝叫做支付鸨。

Tā hái tǐng yǒu chuàngyì de, bǎ zhīfùbǎo jiàozuò zhīfùbǎo。

The guy is a genius. He called Alipay Alipimp!
