【Catch Phrase】怼(duì)

Writer:   | Editor: 杨梅  | From:  | Updated: 2017-01-19

Meaning:

This character originally meant “hate” or “resent,” as demonstrated by literature dating back to the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). In some northern Chinese dialects, the character is used to mean “hitting” or “fighting against.” However, Chinese netizens rediscovered the character, thinking the structure of “对” above “心” straightforwardly expressive. Since then, it has been widely used to mean “confronting.”

Example:

A: 昨天的会议你参加了吗?听说讨论很激烈。

Zuótiān de huìyì nǐ cānjiā le ma? Tīngshuō tǎolùn hěn jīliè。

Did you attend yesterday’s meeting? I heard that there was a heated debate.

B: 是啊,小王和小李因为谁负责新项目互怼,差点没动手。

Shì a, xiǎowáng hé xiǎolǐ yīnwèi shuí fùzé xīn xiàngmù hùduì, chàdiǎn méi dòngshǒu。

Indeed. Xiao Wang and Xiao Li confronted each other on who should be in charge of the new project and almost got into a fight.
