Clothes were Shenzhen's major export in the city's early years, and the garment industry employs a large number of workers. Shenzhen has become China's largest production base for ladies' clothes. The number of garment companies in Shenzhen exceeded 3,200 in 2008, including more than 50 with an annual output of at least 100 million yuan. More than 30,000 clothes designers work for more than 800 Chinese fashion brands.
