Alongside the world’s largest beer festival now being held in Munich, Germany, a local five-star hotel is inviting gourmets to join in on the festivities by putting on their own version of Oktoberfest.

Until Oct. 26, guests can attend a carnival at the Shenzhen Marriott Hotel Golden Bay and feast on traditional German dishes, free-flowing beer and delicacies from around the world. The hotel also holds fun activities for guests. For example, winners of a beer-drinking competition, held on weekends and public holidays, can take home an original-design Bavarian souvenir.

The Oktoberfest tradition started in 1810 to celebrate the Oct. 12 marriage of Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig to the Saxon-Hildburghausen Princess Therese. Celebrations for their anniversaries were held annually thereafter that eventually grew larger and more elaborate. Apart from beer and foods, guests traditionally participate in beer-drinking competitions, singing, horse racing and parades.

At the hotel’s all-day dining restaurant Golden Bay Kitchen, now transformed into a German beer bar where pretzels and antique-looking beer mugs sit on blue and white checkered tablecloth, people are welcomed by staffers in traditional Bavarian garb and smiles.

With German sausage and cheese salad, grilled assorted German sausage and German lentil soup, the buffet dinner has no shortage of authentic German food. There is also a wide selection of German craft beer.

While enjoying a fantastic seaview through the floor-to-ceiling French windows, guests can also try local delights and cuisines from around the world. Sashimi fans can taste impressively-arranged fresh seafood; grill lovers can order from the open kitchen. Chinese specialties range from fresh pot-cooked seafood, handmade dim sum, noodles and many kinds of locally-grown seasonal vegetables. Homemade European-style pastas and quality meats and poultry are served with all sorts of Mediterranean sauces and artisan cheeses. There are also healthy freshly-pressed fruit juices, mouth-watering desserts and ice creams.

After a walk through the exquisitely designed garden right outside the restaurant — featuring all shapes of bird sculptures in water landscapes, or a few more steps down to the beach, you will call it a perfect day and a sumptuous dinner with loved ones.

Sitting on the beachfront of the Golden Bay facing the South China Sea in Dapeng Peninsula, the newly-opened hotel also makes a perfect choice for a weekend away from the hustle and bustle of city life.

The Oktoberfest dinner buffet is priced at 288 yuan (US$43.6) per person from Sunday to Thursday, and 398 yuan for Friday, Saturday and public holidays. The prices are subject to a 15 percent service charge.
