A 23-YEAR-OLD man, whose eyes were severely myopic, has undergone surgery at a Shenzhen hospital to restore his eyesight, according to a SZTV’s news report.

The man, from the Chaozhou-Shantou region, surnamed Zhang, said his eyesight had begun deteriorating when he was 10, which was probably due to genetic factors. The myopic degree of his right eye was 2,500 degrees and his left eye was 2,600 degrees.

According to the report, Zhang couldn’t see the five fingers of his own hand clearly without wearing glasses. Even when he was wearing glasses, he still couldn’t see things as clearly as normal people do. His eyes were so severely myopic that they couldn’t be treated with laser surgery.

Zhang had failed to find a job because of his shortsightedness, and his family had brought him to hospitals in Guangzhou and Shantou seeking treatment.

When they visited a hospital in Shenzhen, doctors offered Zhang a final solution. They implanted an intraocular dioptric lens, which weighs only 0.1 grams and is thinner than 0.05 millimeters, into each of his eyes. The surgery has restored Zhang’s eyesight and now he can see things normally without wearing glasses.
