A total of 54 oil paintings by more than a dozen renowned professors from Repin Academy of Fine Arts will show up Sunday afternoon at J Space, a factory-turned-art space, in OCT-LOFT.

Titled “The Cultural Spirit of a City — Russian Contemporary Art in Shenzhen,” the exhibition is expected to serve as a window into the current art scene in Russia. “By ‘contemporary art,’ we refer here to the current life instead of the contemporary painting techniques or styles in Russia,” explained Li Zhuangzhi, curator of the art show, Wednesday.

“The cultural spirit of a city is the soul of the city. When Russian contemporary art meets Shenzhen, a metropolis well-known for its rapid economic development and unique feature of openness, what impact will it have? That is what we are interested to see,” said Li.

As one of the four world-famous academies of fine arts, Repin Academy of Fine Arts has trained many world-renowned artists and has immensely influenced Chinese modern art, especially the establishment and development of modern Chinese fine arts education.

The artists joining the J Space show include Andrey Bazanov, chairman of the oil painting committee of St. Petersburg Fine Arts Association and vice chairman of the association and Alexander Grishin, vice chairman of St. Petersburg Fine Arts Association. True to the classical realistic approach, most of their art works bear distinctive characteristics of local culture and folklore, according to the curator.

The exhibition is part of a public art activity, also including a research seminar on Sino-Russian Art and an exhibition of the Belt and Road international artists’ alliance.

J Space, located in the North Area of OCT-LOFT, Nanshan District, is an art organization striving to promote contemporary art both domestically and internationally by providing a platform for cultural exchange, serving renowned artists and fostering the younger generations.
