In light of this, Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra (SSO) is joining hands with violinist Huang Mengla to stage a concert Feb. 2 for local fans. Conducted by Yang Yang, Huang will perform Bernstein’s “Serenade After Plato’s ‘Symposium’” in collaboration with SSO.

Violinist Huang Mengla.

The 30-minute piece for solo violin, strings and percussion is a five-movement concerto written by Bernstein in 1954. The composer drew inspiration from Plato’s “Symposium,” a dialogue of related statements in praise of love, each statement made by a distinguished speaker. As the violin is the most prominent solo instrument in its orchestration, the work can be considered a violin concerto. One of the representing works of Bernstein, this piece has been regularly performed.

Huang, born in 1980 in Shanghai, is one of the most active violinists of our time. In 2002, he won the first prize at the prestigious Paganini International Violin Competition in Italy, where he was also awarded the Renato De Barbieri Memorial award for the best interpretation of Paganini’s caprices and the Mario Ruminelli Memorial award.

He began to study violin at 4. Admitted to Shanghai Conservatory at 8, his talent was recognized by Yu Lina, with whom he went on to study. In 2006 he received his master’s degree and became the youngest faculty member at his alma mater. In 2006, he moved to London to study with Gyorgy Pauk at Royal Academy of Music.

Huang has worked as a soloist with many of the world’s finest orchestras, including Bamberg Symphony Orchestra, Radio Symphony Orchestra Stuttgart and NHK Symphony Orchestra.

Yang, artistic director of Hangzhou Philharmonic Orchestra, is one of the most active young conductors in China. He came in the first place at the Dimitris Mitropoulos International Competition for Orchestral Conducting in Greece in 2006.

SSO will also perform Brahms’ “Symphony No. 1 in C Minor,” which the perfectionistic composer spent at least 14 years completing. The piece has been dubbed Beethoven’s No. 10, due to perceived similarities between the work and various compositions of Beethoven.
