Russian National Orchestra will collaborate with pianist Mikhail Pletnev to present Rachmaninoff’s “Piano Concerto No. 2.” The orchestra will also play the Russian composer’s “Symphonic Dances.” Alexander Sladkovsky will wield the baton.

“Piano Concerto No. 2” is one of Rachmaninoff’s most enduringly popular pieces, establishing his fame as a concerto composer. “Symphonic Dances” is his last composition. The work is fully representative of the composer’s later style with its curious, shifting harmonies, the almost Prokofiev-like grotesquerie of the outer movements and a focus on individual instrumental tone colors throughout.
Pletnev is also the founder of the Russian National Orchestra, the first orchestra convened without governmental support in Russia since 1917. At age 21, he won the gold medal at the International Tchaikovsky Competition in 1978, which earned him international recognition and drew great attention worldwide. He later stepped down as principal conductor in the late 1990s, but remained the orchestra’s artistic director. Pletnev was principal guest conductor of the Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana in Lugano, Switzerland from 2008 to 2010. He also taught at the Moscow Conservatory. Pletnev has acknowledged Sergei Rachmaninoff as a particularly notable influence on him as a musician.
Sladkovsky is the chief conductor and artistic director of the Tatarstan National Symphony Orchestra and has received the title of People’s Artist of Russia. He graduated from Moscow and St. Petersburg conservatories. From 2013, Sladkovsky is signed to Sony Music Entertainment Russia.
