Woodcut New Year pictures made in Shandong, Tianjin, Chongqing, Henan and Hebei are on display at Xiangmi Park.

New Year’s pictures are usually printed with simple lines and bright, warm colors. The art of New Year’s pictures has a very long history in China and reflects Chinese society, daily life, beliefs and customs. Every Lunar New Year, it is customary for people to buy such pictures to hang on their doors. The entire home from the front door to each bedroom is covered with a variety of colorful symbols of auspiciousness and wealth in these New Year’s decorations.

The original form of New Year’s pictures included an illustration of a door god styled in the Tang Dynasty (618-907). Later on, more subjects such as fairy tales, the Kitchen God, women and babies were included. Customarily, as each Chinese New Year arrives, every family replaces last year’s picture in order to say “goodbye” to the past and “welcome” to the future.

The most famous places known for producing New Year’s pictures are Sichuan, Tianjin, Shandong and Suzhou. Among the four, Yangliuqing from Tianjin is regarded as the greatest. Yangliuqing’s paintings were first produced between 1573 and 1620.
