THE number of new gastrointestinal cancer cases in Shenzhen reached 3,800 in 2017, an increase of more than 400 compared with 2016 and representing a growth rate of nearly 10 percent, the Daily Sunshine reported yesterday.

The statistics were revealed at a forum on the prevention and treatment of gastrointestinal tumors held in Longgang District from Friday to Sunday. Nearly 100 famous experts across the country presented the latest research achievements in the treatment of gastrointestinal cancer.

From a geographical perspective, intestinal cancers are more common in Guangdong Province, while gastric cancers are common in northern China. In Shenzhen, among 3,800 cases of gastrointestinal cancers, more than 2,000 were intestinal cancers.

“The high incidence of gastrointestinal cancer is related to people’s living habits. Good eating habits and regular aerobic exercise are good for maintaining gastrointestinal health,” said Wang Tianbao, a doctor at the Cancer Hospital of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, Shenzhen Center.

He suggested that people over 40 years old should have a gastrointestinal examination in order to discover malignant gastrointestinal tumors earlier, and should get re-examined every three to five years.

According to an annual report on tumor cases, the number of cancer patients reached 3.8 million in China last year, and the death toll was 2.6 million.

Gastrointestinal cancer is among the five most common cancers in both men and women.
