DRIVERS of light passenger vehicles with no more than nine seats need to make online reservations starting from today for going to Dapeng Peninsula during the May Day holidays between Sunday and May 1.

Vehicles of more than 10 seats, taxis, cargo vehicles and other vehicles for special purposes such as firefighting, rescue and engineering won’t be subject to the rule.

Police have arranged for 30,000 parking slots per day to be made available for reservation by drivers, including 20,000 for owners of privately owned vehicles and 10,000 for hotels and other entities that wish to book on behalf of clients and customers.

Reservations can be made through police’s official account on WeChat, the official website and Alipay, police said.

Police will use plate recognition systems to capture violators, who will face a fine of 300 yuan (US$47.7) and three penalty points.

Those who successfully make reservations by providing their phone and license plate numbers will receive an official confirmation text message from the police automatic response system. Those who can’t go as planned can cancel that reservation, but three cancellations could lead to suspension of use of the app.

To ensure life in Dapeng is not affected by the policy, vehicles owned by Dapeng locals need to be registered ahead of the holiday period.

Police will monitor the results of the policy, and research if it should be extended to the summer season or expanded to the Meisha area.

Dapeng, located in eastern Shenzhen, is a popular holiday destination. Yet heavy traffic congestion is often reported in summer and holiday seasons when people wish to escape the summer heat.
