MORE than 1,000 migratory birds have recently been seen in Shenzhen Talent Park, which opened in November last year, in Nanshan District, according to an official with Shenzhen Bird Watching Society.

The birds are mostly passing through Shenzhen on their way from Australia and New Zealand to more northern territories, said Zhang Gaofeng, deputy secretary general of Shenzhen Bird Watching Society.

Each year, hundreds of thousands of migratory birds fly across Shenzhen Bay on a route from East Asia to Australia. To provide resting places for the birds, Shenzhen Talent Park has specifically designed artificial reefs for them. The first batch of migratory birds recently arrived there for a pit stop.

According to experts, most of the birds are small snipes. Statistics from a long-term investigation show that there were 3,000 to 5,000 small snipes resting here in the springs and autumns between 2014 and 2016.

The talent park, adjoining Shenzhen Bay, was originally a F1 motorboat course and an internal lake made by sea reclamation.

During the construction of the park, both the bird watching society and political advisers proposed to reserve space for accommodating migratory birds.

At present, in addition to hundreds of small snipes, various species of migratory birds can also be spotted in the park.

According to members of the bird watching society, although the number is not as high as in the previous years, the birds still have to adapt to the park as it has just been completed.

The experts stressed that when observing birds, citizens must keep a long distance and avoid disturbing them. It is also advised that citizens refrain from feeding the birds and interfering with their living habits.
