Seven French New Wave films directed by Francois Truffaut and Jean-Luc Godard, as well as a documentary depicting the two masters’ friendship, will be shown at the “Two in the Wave” film exhibition at Broadway Cinematheque. Most of the films are widely considered some of the best French films in the history of cinema.

‘The 400 Blows’ 《四百击》 (1959)

One of the defining films of the French New Wave, “The 400 Blows” (French: “Les Quatre Cents Coups”) displays many of the characteristic traits of the movement. Directed by Truffaut, the film is about Antoine Doinel, a misunderstood adolescent in Paris who struggles with his parents and teachers due to his rebellious behavior.

“The 400 Blows” received numerous awards and nominations, including the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Director and a Palme d’Or nomination in 1959.

Time: 7 p.m., April 20, 26

‘Pierrot the Madman’《狂人皮埃罗》 (1965)

Pierrot escapes his boring society and travels from Paris to the Mediterranean Sea with Marianne, a girl chased by hit-men from Algeria. They lead an unorthodox life, always on the run.

Directed by Godard, starring Jean-Paul Belmondo and Anna Karina, “Pierrot the Madman” (French: “Pierrot le Fou”) is based on the 1962 novel “Obsession” by Lionel White.

Time: 1 p.m., April 21; 7 p.m., April 24

‘Breathless’ 《筋疲力尽》(1960)

“Breathless” (French “A Bout de Souffle”) is written and directed by Jean-Luc Godard in his feature directorial debut about a wandering criminal (Jean-Paul Belmondo) and his U.S. girlfriend (Jean Seberg). It also represented Belmondo’s breakthrough as an actor.

Time: 3:20 p.m., April 21; 7 p.m., April 25

‘Band of Outsiders’ 《法外之徒》(1964)

Directed by Jean-Luc Godard, “Band of Outsiders” (French: “Bande a Part”) is about three people who commit a robbery. It received positive critical reviews, and its dance scene has been referenced several times in popular culture.

Time: 7 p.m., April 22; 9:05 p.m., April 24

‘Contempt’ 《蔑视》(1963)

Screenwriter Paul Javal’s marriage to his wife Camille disintegrates during movie production as she spends time with the producer. Layered conflicts between art and business ensue.

Directed by Jean-Luc Godard and starring Brigitte Bardot, “Contempt” (French: “Le Mépris”) is based on the Italian novel “A Ghost at Noon” by Alberto Moravia.

Time: 1 p.m., April 22; 8:45 p.m., April 25

‘Stolen Kisses’《偷吻》 (1968)

“Stolen Kisses” (French: “Baisers Volés”) is a romantic comedy-drama film directed by Francois Truffaut starring Jean-Pierre Leaud and Claude Jade.

It continues the story of the character Antoine Doinel, whom Truffaut had previously depicted in “The 400 Blows” and the short film “Antoine and Colette.” In this film, Antoine begins his relationship with Christine Darbon, which is depicted further in the last two films in the series, “Bed and Board” and “Love on the Run.”

Time: 7 p.m., April 21; 8:50 p.m., April 23

‘Two in the Wave’《新浪潮双杰》 (2010)

“Two in the Wave” (French: “Deux de la Vague”) is a documentary film directed by Emmanuel Laurent. The film depicts the friendship between French directors Francois Truffaut and Jean-Luc Godard. The film is narrated by Antoine de Baecque, Truffaut’s biographer and former “Cahiers du Cinema” editor.

Time: 3 p.m., April 22; 8:55 p.m., April 26

‘Bed and Board’《婚姻生活》 (1970)

The fourth installment in Truffaut’s chronicle of the ardent, anachronistic Antoine Doinel, “Bed and Board” (French: “Domicile Conjugal”) plunges his hapless creation once again into crisis. Expecting his first child and still struggling to find steady employment, Doinel involves himself in a relationship with a beautiful Japanese woman that threatens to destroy his marriage.

Time: 8:55 p.m., April 20; 7 p.m., April 23
