THE May Day holiday will be cloudy with some periods of sun and a light mist in the mornings and evenings.

Temperatures will reach a high of 30 degrees Celsius, according to the forecast of Shenzhen Meteorological Observatory on Thursday.

From Friday to Sunday, there will be occasional showers, but on Monday and Tuesday, the weather will be cloudy with periods of sun, the observatory said.

However, the observatory advises those driving to northern Guangdong and neighboring provinces to be cautious of thunder showers in Guangdong and heavy rain in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, as well as Hunan, Jiangxi and Fujian provinces.

There will be heavy and even torrential rain in cities in western Guangdong, Qingyuan, Shaoguan, Heyuan and Zhaoqing on Friday and Saturday.

Shenzhen expressways are expected to see a surge in vehicles starting Saturday afternoon for the May Day holiday, according to an analysis by Shenzhen Expressway Co. released Wednesday.

The expressways will be toll free from Sunday to Tuesday for vehicles with no more than seven seats.

The post-holiday traffic is expected to arrive between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. Tuesday.

The report said the Humen section of Guangzhou-Shenzhen Expressway, the Qinghu-SCC section of Jihe Expressway, the Shenzhen section of Yanhui Expressway, the Luotian section of Longda Expressway and Humen Bridge are easily congested. The opening of new expressways, such as Renxin Expressway and Chaozhang Expressway, offer new options for drivers traveling to Hunan and Fujian provinces.

Yunzhan Expressway, extending from Pearl River Delta cities to western Guangdong, could help relieve the congestion on Shenhai Expressway.

Those who are traveling to Huizhou, Heyuan and Jiangxi can choose the Meiguan-Guanshen-Guanghui expressways when the Shenzhen section of Huiyan Expressway is congested.

Holidaymakers traveling to Dapeng Peninsula need to make a reservation through the police’s official website, or their WeChat or Alipay accounts. Police set a limit of 30,000 vehicles per day during the holiday period.
