Random spot checks showed nearly 40 percent of couriers and delivery persons are still not wearing helmets even though police have implemented strict rules and the industry association has required them to wear helmets to reduce traffic risks.

The survey conducted by sznews.com showed that 74 e-bike couriers out of 178 weren’t wearing helmets as they passed the intersection of Fuhua Road and Futian Central No. 2 Road between 12 p.m. and 12:30 p.m. Monday. Some couriers who weren’t wearing helmets had replaced them with caps to shade them from the sunlight. Some of them placed the helmets in the basket or hung them from the handle bars.

At the intersection of Tairan No. 9 Road and Tairan No. 6 Road, 112 couriers were recorded without helmets at around noon Monday. A total of 215 e-bike drivers passed the intersection in 20 minutes.

In the early morning yesterday, a tricycle driver surnamed Dai was killed in a collision with a truck at an intersection of Minzhi Boulevard in Longhua District. The tricycle driver was suspected of running a red light. The truck driver surnamed Dan is being investigated.

The city reported 136 e-bike-related accidents that caused 35 deaths, accounting for 38 percent of the deaths in traffic accidents in the first four months of the year. Among them, 27 died of brain damage, accounting for 77 percent of the total deaths.
