Meaning:
“土味” is roughly the equivalent of “hillbilly taste,” and “情话” refers to “a lover’s prattle.” Widely used by Chinese netizens, this term refers to cheesy words told to a loved one, especially those copied from the Internet and being of bad taste. The term was used by netizens to label Taiwanese pop idol Jay Chou’s new song “If You Don’t Love Me, It’s Fine” earlier this month, and has caught on.
Example:
A: 小丽的男朋友是撩妹高手啊。
Xiǎolì de nánpéngyǒu shì liáomèi gāoshǒu a。
Xiaoli’s boyfriend is good at chatting up girls.
B: 你听谁说的？
Nǐ tīng shuí shuō de？
Who told you this?
A: 小丽说，他的土味情话张嘴就来。认识不久，他就对小丽说“你有点像我的一个亲戚 — 我妈的儿媳妇”。
Xiǎolì shuō，tā de tǔwèi qínghuà zhāngzuǐ jiùlái。Rènshí bùjiǔ ，tā jiù duì xiǎolì shuō “nǐ yǒudiǎn xiàng wǒ de yīgè qīnqī — wǒ mā de érxífù”。
Xiaoli said he is never shy to tell her cheesy sweet stuff. Not long after they got acquainted he told her, “You look like one of my relatives — my mother’s daughter-in-law.”
