The site of a waste landfill near Fulong Road in Longhua District has been closed and will be renovated into an urban park, the Shenzhen Special Zone Daily reported.

In a letter responding to the suggestions of lawmakers, the city’s housing and construction bureau said the second phase of the Bujiuwo landfill site had been closed , and greenery and afforestation work is going on at the landfill.

The site, at the border of Bao’an and Nanshan districts, was put into use in 2008 to handle the large amount of dirt from the excavation for the city’s Phase II Metro project. In 2013, the second phase of the site was put into use.

However, with the urban development in the district, the remote site at the foot of Mt. Yangtai has become the central area of Longhua. It is about five minutes away from Longhua CBD by car.

The thousands of dump trucks going to and leaving the landfill site every day has drawn wide criticism from people living in the nearby neighborhoods. The complaints over dust and noise pollution have drawn the attention of lawmakers of the municipal people’s congress.

At the annual sessions, lawmakers have been suggesting the cancellation of the landfill site since the second phase of the landfill site has been put into service.

In the letter, the construction bureau said the landfill site only accepted dirt from Metro projects and banned other construction, kitchen waste and toxic waste, so there was no need to worry about its environmental impact, even though it is close to the Changlinpi Reservoir.

After the closure of the landfill, the environment and water resources authorities will work out an overall plan for the environmental treatment of the Changlipi Reservoir.

The landfill site will be turned into a flower-themed park, and the land in the area will be used for afforestation and ecological agriculture.
