Five Shenzhen high school graduates have achieved scores that are ranking them among the top 40 of all gaokao takers in Guangdong Province. Their exam results were not posted to the score-checking system that opened yesterday to students who sat for the National College Entrance Examinations, also known as gaokao, earlier this month.

Zhang Ruochen, a student who graduated from Shenzhen Middle School, has entered the top 10 list among all Guangdong gaokao takers for science subjects and the other four students were confirmed to rank within the top 20 for arts subjects.

The four students are Zhao Yuqing from Shenzhen Foreign Languages School, Wang Diyao from Cuiyuan Middle School, Luo Xuan from Bao’an High School and Zhang Zhengyu from Shenzhen Fuyuan School.

The gaokao results were made available for all exam takers to see online at 11:30 a.m. yesterday. Like the other students who scored among the top 40 in Guangdong Province, the five Shenzhen students did not see their scores online, but received text messages informing that they had entered the top 20 for either the science or the arts exams.

Zhang Ruochen was confirmed to be one of the top 10 students for the science exam. She had already signed up to attend Peking University in the coming fall.

The student said that math was actually not her strong subject when she was younger, but her math skills started to improve during her last year in junior high school as she began trying to solve every math problem despite the difficulty level.

When asked what learning methods she used to achieve such a high score at the national exam, especially for math and science subjects, Zhang said that paying attention to mistakes she had made while doing math exercises helped her improve a lot.

Good time management was another key factor for Zhang’s academic success. The student said that she would make learning plans for each week and would list things that she must achieve within a certain amount of time.

Zhang had already been admitted to a special talent cultivation project at Peking University. She intends to major in physics and economics. For the coming summer holiday, she plans to read as many books as she likes, but did not have time to read during her last year of high school.

Zhao Yuqin from Shenzhen Foreign Languages School scored top 20 among all students participating in the arts exam in Guangdong Province. The student had already secured a place studying English at Tsinghua University before taking the gaokao.

Zhao attributed her high gaokao score to her calmness during the exams because she had already been admitted to the top university, but she was still surprised to learn that she ranked among top 20 in the province.

According to Wang Binwei, the head of Guangdong’s examination authority, the province plans to enroll a total of 654,000 students to attend universities in the province, 50,000 more than the year before.
