Opera fans will be treated to a delicate Kunqu opera version of Shakespeare’s classic romance, “Romeo and Juliet,” in Shenzhen this week.
The show was created by the Jiangsu Kunqu Opera House in 2016 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the death of Shakespeare and ancient Chinese playwright Tang Xianzu.
Set against the backdrop of ancient China, the classic love story is newly interpreted with distinctive Chinese elements of ancient music and verse.
Kunqu is one of the oldest extant forms of Chinese opera. It dominated Chinese theater from the 16th to the 18th centuries. It has been listed as one of the Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO since 2001.
《醉心花》故事母本来自《罗密欧与朱丽叶》，以古典戏曲的方式进行演绎，依照传统昆曲格律填词作曲。
醉心花，又名曼陀罗，微毒，花色大起大落。花语有“无间的爱和复仇”的意思，代表着不可预知的死亡和爱。故事讲述姬、嬴两大家族有着世代仇恨，一言不合就是杀人流血，刀剑相向。可是家族里的两个年轻人，却偏偏在一次邂逅中一见钟情，私定终身。最终却难以抵抗命运，面对家族、爱情的矛盾，努力抗争到无力抗争，双双殉情的故事。
2008年，一部《1699桃花扇》，让观众认识了如今昆剧界最炙手可热的施夏明和单雯，本次昆剧《醉心花》，由单雯、施夏明再次担任主演。值得一提的是，本剧中全部演员都是省昆第四代演员中的青年翘楚。这也是他们继《南柯梦》之后的再度集体亮相。青春洋溢、绚烂年华，以最古典之韵味演绎最经典之爱情，当昆剧打出一张“青春牌”，会给观众带来怎样的惊喜，着实令人期待。
