The number of Metro riders using Quick Response (QR) codes for fare payments has reached 421,000 per day on average, double the average of the first week the service was launched a month ago.

On June 18 during the Dragon Boat Festival holiday, the number of riders using the QR code fare payment service reached 611,000, 15 percent of total riders, sources from Shenzhen Metro Group said yesterday.

Use of the QR-scanning service was driven up by tourists from other cities visiting Shenzhen for the holiday. During the Dragon Boat Festival, around 591,100 people used the service, and at Laojie Station, around 10,000 people per day used the service.

The service reduced long lines for buying tickets and provided a convenient alternative for tourists who don’t have Shenzhentong cards, especially for those patronizing Metro stations near railway stations and tourist attractions.

Shenzhen Metro operators will extend QR code fare payment service availability to all turnstiles at all Metro stations before the end of the year.

The operators officially launched the QR code payment service on eight Metro lines May 8. To utilize it, riders must first download the Shenzhen Metro app, Shenzhen Metro e-commuting app, or the Tencent WeChat mini-app Transport Code to link their personal information with the service. The fares will be deducted directly from the rider’s WeChat Wallet.
