Five Shenzhen enterprises from the communications, electronics, bio-medicine and Internet fields were awarded the top prize at the 19th WIPO-SIPO Award for Chinese Outstanding Patented Invention & Industrial Design, sznews.com reported yesterday.

This year, among the six gold awards won by Guangdong enterprises, Shenzhen companies bagged five of them, ranking first and accounting for 20 percent of the total number in the country, according to the report.

Huawei, Nationz Technologies, China Communication Technology Co. Ltd., Chipscreen and Tencent are the local companies that won the gold awards. Each of them will receive 1 million yuan (US$150,283) from the provincial government as rewards.

The winning entries include a self-developed antitumor drug, a secure payment technology called RCC (range controlled communication), a Wi-Fi repeater applicable to more scenes, a microwave converter used in multi-satellite communications and the industrial design of red packets on the mobile phone.

It is said that the award-winning items not only embody the companies’ innovation and scientific research abilities, but also greatly enhance their popularity and competitiveness.

The award is the highest honor in the field of patents in China, which is aimed at awarding excellent patented inventions and industrial designs. It is organized by the State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO) and is recognized by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).

The evaluation criteria not only emphasize the technical and innovation level of the project, but also pay attention to its application, protection and management in the process of turning the technology into marketable products.
