Shenzhen plans to add 100,000 parking spaces by the end of 2020 by making full use of public spaces at parks, schools, hospitals and idle space in old residential areas and implementing intelligent parking projects, according to a plan on constructing parking spaces between 2018 and 2020.

A total of 181 projects will be implemented at public places including parks, schools and hospitals and will provide 71,200 parking spaces by 2020.

Through the renovation of old residential areas, the city will also redesign existing temporary parking spaces by utilizing corners, spaces along walls and scattered plots of land, as well as build mechanical parking facilities to accommodate more cars. The projects in old residential areas are expected to provide 31,100 parking spaces, according to an announcement jointly released by Shenzhen’s development and reform commission, the city’s transport commission, the construction bureau and the traffic police bureau.

By making full use of big data, the city will build a city-level intelligent parking service platform that integrates different types of parking resources and improves the efficiency of parking lots.

The authorities will adopt a private and public partnership model to attract private investments to participate in the construction of parking spaces.

The plan is set to relieve parking difficulty with the increase of cars in the city.

By the end of 2016, the number of vehicles in Shenzhen had reached 3 million. Despite the fact that authorities capped the increase of cars at 100,000 a year since 2015, the city still faces a shortage of parking spaces.

Police statistics showed the city had 1.11 million parking spaces at the end of 2016.
