The Chinese University of Hong Kong-Shenzhen (CUHK-SZ) announced Friday that it had completed the enrollment of 1,146 undergraduate students for this year.
The university said the grades of the incoming students are higher than in the previous two years. The admissions score for science and engineering students at the university is 133 points higher, and the admissions score for humanities students is 82 points higher than at China’s top-tier universities.
In particular, as most of the courses offered at the university are taught in English, all of the enrolled students are required to have achieved a certain level of English proficiency. The new students’ average English grade on gaokao, the National College Entrance Exam, is as high as 138 out of 150.
The university selects students based on their gaokao results in most provinces, but also evaluates students with an independent enrollment system in four provinces and cities such as Guangdong, Zhejiang, Shandong and Shanghai.
The independent enrollment system assesses applicants based on their gaokao results, scores on an exam designed by the university and their high school academic performance. CUHK-SZ has taken in 455 students through the independent system.
The university also announced that it would, for the first time, open a special “Nobel Class” this year. Six students from nationally renowned high schools from all across China who stand out among over 100 candidates will be directly instructed by Nobel Prize winners who are appointed as guest professors at the university.
An opening ceremony for the new students will be organized Sept. 2.
