A tunnel linking Pingshan and Yantian districts will shorten the drive time from an hour to 10 minutes, the Nanfang Daily reported yesterday.

Currently, the shortest drive from Pingshan to Yantian is 29 kilometers and takes about one hour.

The tunnel is part of an under-construction expressway, Pingyan Passage, that will link the two districts. The expressway starts from the intersection of Jinlong Boulevard and Zhongshan Boulevard in Pingshan and ends at an interchange that will be built near Yantian Port.

According to the report, the expressway will have 17 bridges and a six-lane tunnel passing through Maluan Mountain from north to south, which will be the longest municipal tunnel in China.

With 400 meters of construction remaining, the tunnel is expected to be finished within the year.

What’s special about the tunnel is that it incorporates views throughout the drive. Drivers passing through the tunnel will be able to enjoy ocean and mountain views as they approach either end.

Also, both directions of the tunnel will feature natural cave scenes so that drivers don’t get tired from driving the long distance inside of the tunnel, according to the report.

Additionally, Pingyan Passage will link to three of the city’s expressways, making transportation between Longgang, Pingshan and Yantian districts much more convenient.
