The Shenzhen Municipal Committee of the Communist Youth League of China has announced a plan to sponsor 1,500 working youths to realize their college dreams in 2018.

The project was started in 2011. This year, the committee built partnerships with Northwestern Polytechnic University and Huazhong University of Science and Technology to develop talents for high-tech enterprises in Shenzhen. It also cooperates with eight other universities, covering 84 majors in total.

Qiu Minghui, a student sponsored by the project in 2017, was invited to give a speech at a press conference Thursday.

“After I found a job and started making a living in Shenzhen, I gradually got bored with the same pattern of life and lost my passion to strive for my dream, until I was informed about this project,” said Qiu. “I believed it was an opportunity to change my life, so I signed up without a doubt.”

Now, Qiu is studying at the Shenzhen learning center of Central China Normal University. He feels enriched through the variety of curriculums and activities at the university.

Enterprises in Shenzhen have also benefitted from the project. Jiang Han, a company representative, said that his company has gained new access to train staffers by combining theories with practice thanks to the project.

Candidates who are working in Shenzhen, 18 to 35 years old and have a high school certificate, can apply to join the project at www.yuanmengjihua.com by Aug. 31. A selection exam will be arranged.

Since 2011, this project has sponsored 19,638 youths to go to universities. A total of 7,760 students have won full scholarships and another 11,878 received scholarships covering 50 percent of their fees.
