Shenzhen ranks 82nd on the list of the world’s most livable cities in 2018, according to an annual survey of living conditions released by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), the Southern Metropolis Daily reported yesterday.

Based on assessments of stability, healthcare, culture and environment, and education and infrastructure, the EIU publishes an annual chart that ranks 140 cities in the world on quality of life.

Ten Chinese cities have made it into the top 100 — Hong Kong, Taipei, Suzhou, Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Dalian, Guangzhou and Qingdao.

Austria’s capital Vienna is crowned the world’s most livable city in 2018, followed by Melbourne, Osaka, Calgary, Sydney, Vancouver, Toronto, Tokyo, Copenhagen and Adelaide.

According to the EIU, the top-ranking cities have relatively low population densities, which foster a range of recreational activities without leading to high crime levels or overburdened infrastructure.

Three cities in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area have made it onto the list, underpinning the area’s goal of becoming a world-class city cluster featuring economic vitality, livability, entrepreneurship and tourism.

According to a report compiled by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in June, Shenzhen, along with Hong Kong and Guangzhou, was also among the top 10 cities in China in terms of livability.
