Metro riders in Shenzhen will not need to use a QR code, Shenzhentong card, or the traditional method of buying a token, to pay for a ride after a new technology is put into use.

You will just need to go through the turnstile.

At the ongoing China Smart City International Expo at Shenzhen Convention and Exhibition Center, Shenzhen Metro Group, Tencent, and GRG Banking Equipment Co. Ltd., unveiled their latest Metro ticket solution that combines facial recognition and credit payment.

By tying their personal ID photo, bank card and Shenzhentong card, riders can pay by facial recognition without having to stop in front of the screen. The whole process takes 0.33 seconds.

According to GRG Banking Equipment, the new ticket system will have three identification modes, including single facial recognition (which requires users to tie their ID card, bank card and Shenzhentong card), face+ID card mode (which compares a user’s face with the ID photo), and face+finger vein recognition. The system also supports free rides for seniors above the age of 65 who have registered with their ID information.

Although the technology is mature, it hasn’t been put into use yet. When the facial recognition turnstile is put into use, according to Shenzhen Metro, riders will have a better commuting experience.
