Old Master Q 2.0 selling exhibition in HK

This August, Old Master Q, an enduring icon which encapsulates the collective memory of Hong Kong, returns once again to Sotheby’s. Entitled “Old Master Q 2.0,” the exhibition will be the final public selling exhibition of the late artist Alphonso Wong (1925-2017).

The exhibition will feature original works by the father-and-son duo, including Alphonso Wong’s early color covers and comic strips in four and six-frame formats, as well as acrylic paintings by Joseph Wong, whose playful and contemporary interpretation of “Old Master Q” characters vests a unique life energy into this quintessential cultural icon of Hong Kong.
“Rock’n Roll”
The star lot of the exhibition — the earliest existing “Old Master Q” cover artwork “Rock’n Roll” — is offered at an online auction until Aug. 17. This is the first time Sotheby’s Hong Kong is combining its online and offline platforms, offering collectors an enhanced purchasing experience.
Sotheby’s Hong Kong Sl2 Gallery director Jonathan Wong said: “We auctioned Alphonso Wong’s original artworks in April 2008. This paved the way for the highly popular selling exhibition staged at Sotheby’s gallery six years later, which sold out almost as soon as it had opened and became the talk of the town.”
Alphonso Wong moved from Tianjin to Hong Kong in 1956, and created illustrations, comic strips and full-length stories for local newspapers. In the early 1960s, he began the “Old Master Q” comic series. Featuring a series of vivid characters, the comic series instantly attracted a loyal following with its witty humor and succinct text.
Joseph Wong studied architecture and completed his doctoral degree at the Cranbrook Academy of Art. He taught as a professor of architecture at the Philadelphia University of the Arts, where he was granted tenure in 1990. He has published artistic and architectural works in magazines and newspapers.
