Shekou museum adds more exhibits

After a few months’ renovation, the Shekou Museum of China’s Reform and Opening-up, the first history museum dedicated to telling the story of the past 40 years of reform and opening up that have taken place in China, reopened to the public last week. Entry is free.

Sponsored by China Merchants Group and built by China Merchants Shekou, the museum serves as a platform to help people better understand the Shekou Industrial Zone and the history of reform and opening up through exhibits, historical representations and interactive experiences.

Since July 2016, the project organizers have been collecting objects related to the reform and opening up in China, such as a ship ticket between Shekou and Hong Kong, a Donald Duck cloth toy once owned by a migrant worker and library cards belonging to workers.

The museum, on the third floor of the Sea World Culture and Arts Center, opened in December last year and more than 80,000 people have visited it.

In addition to precious historical files, objects and photos, the museum recently created a model of Shekou’s float that participated in the 1984 National Day parade in Beijing, with the widespread slogan of China’s economic reform, “Time Is Money, Efficiency Is Life,” emblazoned on the float. The museum also shows a video titled “From Sea World to Belt and Road” on a circular screen, displaying Shekou as the cradle of the country’s industrial boom and a test tube for change.

The museum will hold public events in the future, such as recruiting student tour guides and organizing lectures.
