A woman surnamed Jiang complained that she had been cheated by a cab driver who had duplicated license plates and gave her fake bank notes for change.

On the night of Aug. 24, after riding from Shenzhen CBD to Yitian Plaza in Nanshan District, the driver parked on a dark roadside hundreds of meters away from the destination and urged Jiang to get out, using a shift change as an excuse, according to a report in yesterday’s Southern Metropolis Daily.

After paying the fare, the driver gave back the change, including a 50-yuan (US$7.34) bank note. Under the light of her phone, Jiang suspected the bank note was fake and demanded a different one. The driver then gave her another bank note without saying a word and drove away.

Jiang memorized the license plate number and, to her surprise, the plate number, B8U4R9, on the receipt was different from the plate number, B0U4R5, on the cab. Shenzhen’s transport commission said the number B8U4R9 was canceled three years ago and B0U4R5 was suspected of being a duplicated plate. An investigation revealed the real cab that was registered under Shenzhen Anteng Cab Service Co. Ltd. was operating in Bao’an District when Jiang took the cab. Anteng company didn’t know why the receipt was still being used, even though B8U4R9 had been canceled in 2016. The commission said it had received many complaints about the car, B0U4R5, and suggested Jiang report the case to the police as it involved the use of duplicated plates and fake bank notes.
