Joe Hisaishi

The New Japan Philharmonic is a symphony orchestra based in Tokyo. It was founded in 1972 with Seiji Ozawa as honorary conductor laureate. The orchestra is known for their film soundtrack productions, notably “Spirited Away” and “Howl’s Moving Castle,” both soundtracks composed, arranged, conducted and performed by Hisaishi. The orchestra also performed the film score for an English-language animated film, “The Brave Little Toaster,” composed by David Newman.

Hisaishi has been associated with animator Hayao Miyazaki since 1984, having composed scores for all but one of his films. In 2008, Hisaishi arranged and performed in a concert conducting the World Dream Orchestra and playing the piano on the occasion of his having worked for 25 years with Miyazaki.

Hisaishi is known for over 100 film scores and solo albums dating back to 1981. He is also recognized for the soundtracks he has provided for filmmaker Takeshi Kitano. Possessing a stylistically distinct sound, Hisaishi’s music has been known to explore and incorporate different genres including minimalist, experimental electronic, European classical and Japanese classical.
